West End Development Seeks to Provide Positive Solutions The South and North Valley's of Routt County have long been growing, slowly and steadily, and so has the west end of town. But ever since the departure of the Curve Market grocery store in 2004, the West End of town has been patiently waiting for the moment of real growth and future potential. And finally, here in the third quarter of 2021, that moment is here. The brand new Sleeping Giant K-8 school opens this fall to the cheers of families and teachers alike. West End, Riverside, Steamboat II, Silver Spur, and Heritage Park neighborhoods continue to grow and are being developed. The Yampa Valley Housing Authority will own 536 acres of land to the west of Steamboat Springs by Aug. 11, creating hope that the ski town’s housing crisis may have a long-term solution. Recently, the housing authority’s board of directors unanimously agreed to enter into a contract to buy the land, and the deal has already been signed by Steamboat 700 LLC, the property’s current owner. Initially, the offer for the property was $23 million, with the funding coming from an anonymous benefactor, and over the past two weeks, Steamboat 700 and the person making the donation to buy the land have been in negotiations.

The glow of lights from construction crews working at the new Sleeping Giant School and the streaks of light created from cars passing along U.S. Highway 40 brighten the evening hours near the construction site of Steamboat School District's $52.5 million pre-K-8th school west of Steamboat Springs near the Steamboat II subdivision. Construction on the new school began in spring 2019 and the project is moving forward with an opening planned for the 2021-22 school year. The new Sleeping Giant School is taking shape to the west of downtown Steamboat Springs, with work progressing on track for the school to open on August 23rd, the first day of the new school year. The new school, which will serve pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade students, is the most significant of several projects the Steamboat Springs School District is working on, but each school had a project recently finished, one that is currently in progress or one that is planned to start soon. Crews are almost finished closing in the exterior of Sleeping Giant School with sheathing currently being added to the outside of the building. Much of the interior framing is complete as well. “Pretty close, just got a few little areas to get buttoned up,” said Mark Preuss, general superintendent on the project for FCI Constructors, who is the general contractor for the project.
